Flat Walks Suitable for All followed by Tasty Food

A short 3.6 miles drive south of Oxen Park lies the small village of Greenodd. Despite its size this lovely village is the perfect place to while away a morning or afternoon.

Find a free parking spot on the main street then follow the path along the river and underneath the A590. The path winds back up to the A590 and you can then cross the footbridge that spans the River Leven estuary. Pause for a moment in the middle and watch the waters as the tides here can come in and out exceedingly quickly. This means it’s best avoiding playing in the sands even while the tide’s out. You may also spot some of the resident swans if you look carefully.

There are various routes to follow at the end of the bridge. If you fancy views towards Hoad in Ulverston and white sands (on a sunny day) then turn right (tides permitting). As you follow the coastline round, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to spot a variety of bird life. Rocky outcrops provide shelter if you want to sunbathe or have a picnic in privacy. Just ensure you check the tide times, so you don’t get caught out.

Alternatively, at the end of the bridge turn left and follow the gravel path surrounded by fields. Pay attention and you might spot a heron amongst the sheep and cows. The path then has various options to take one of which leads to Roudsea Woods. The woods and surrounding Roudsea Moss are a site of scientific interest with the bog lands having formed thousands of years ago. For further information on Roudsea Woods and walks from there Natural England has published the following guide packed with information on flora and fauna plus some useful walking guides: http://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/publication/5794526008442880. It’s worth noting these walking trails start from Roudsea woods themselves so you’ll just need to factor in the walk from Greenodd too!

After the walk you’re likely to have built up an appetite and one of our favourite places to eat is ‘Bakehouse Born and Bread’ at Crakeside Business Park, Greenodd. In addition to delicious lunch and brunches you can buy fresh breads, cakes and bakes. We’ve never had a bad meal there and the 4.7-star rating on Trip Advisor speaks for itself! Dogs are welcome too and even get a basket to lie on.

If the Bakehouse doesn’t quite tick all your boxes the ‘Handmade Ice Cream Company’ have a parlour selling tasty ice creams and waffles. Failing that, the ever-popular Crakeside Fish & Chips hits the traditional British savoury notes.

Also worth a mention are the Sipping Fox where you can pick up wine, beers and cheese for a quiet evening by the fire and Peter Hutchinson the local butcher who has a great selection of meats for a hearty and filling breakfast (or BBQ).
