This May we paid a visit to Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass. A 50-minute drive from Oxen Park.

We were lucky to arrive in time to catch both the World of Owls display in the Hawk & Owl Centre and the later display “Sky Hunters” on the lawn later in the afternoon. These displays were both well worth the time, with knowledgeable handlers and the magnificent birds flying freely.

The weather was lovely for our trip so we could walk around the gardens and appreciate the views and gardens at our leisure. May is the peak season for their collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, which are in colourful full bloom.

The café was a little bit pricey, and the queue was very long. That said, it was a touch early in the tourist season and maybe they were just finding their feet again. There are areas within the grounds for picnics, which maybe a good plan for later in the season.

It was such a lovely day, weather wise, that we chose not to go into the castle but from previous trips its is an interesting castle and tours are available.  We also didn’t go into the Weapon Hall to take advantage of their activities such as Axe throwing and archery. Maybe next year!
